Reading and Math and Literacy, Oh My!

This week, as every week during the school year, I participated in the #ElemMathChat on Thursday night.  The chat was led by Jeremiah Ruesch, @mathkaveli.  The topic of the chat was Promoting Literacy with Math Thinkers.

I particularly love how Jeremiah used his questions and graphics to illuminate how literacy and math are connected.  There was one Venn diagram that showed listening, speaking, comprehension, reading and writing with literacy at the center.  The questions and discussions that Jeremiah posed led people to the conclusion that a good mathematics lesson promotes not only mathematical literacy, but also language arts literacy.  When students read a task or problem, decode it to make sense of the information, solve the problem in a variety of ways, discuss and justify their answers, and write about their strategies, literacy is popping out every place!  For me this is just another example of how vital the learning of mathematics is to reading and life!

The chat happened to fall on my first day of school in a new teaching position.  To say that I was exhausted that evening would be a HUGE understatement.  I never want to miss a chat, but I REALLY wanted to soak in a hot tub and go to bed to rest my aching feet!  I am so glad that I did not give in to my fatigue as I learned so much from my fellow #elemmathchat Tweeps!  I was also mentally and physically refreshed after the chat.  Talking with so many wonderful educators who are excited and passionate about teaching gave me more energy and refreshment than any hot bath could have!  I left the chat bolstered for another early morning and late night and on fire to teach constructively while focusing on problem solving and productive discourse.  These chats are so informational, validating and inspiring, and I am so thankful to have them as a vital part of my Professional Learning Community!

Wow! That is commitment! Great post. Literacy really is coming into every subject, now we just have to get our students to love it! I think we are on the right track.

  2. I agree Melynee! I love the ElemMathChats and find them very informational. I too enjoy the collaboration and find that I learn a lot. However, you are much better than me. I was passed out on my bed during this chat. I was too exhausted to make it, even though I had planned to attend. Sounds like it was a good one. Will be joining again soon!
